Menie, Scotland – Donald Trump concluded a four-day visit to Scotland, during which he focused on discussions surrounding whisky tariffs and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The former U.S. President’s trip included a brief meeting with Scottish First Minister John Swinney at Trump’s Balmedie Estate.
The meeting lasted approximately 15 to 20 minutes, during which Swinney addressed concerns regarding the North Sea oil and gas industry, describing it as “overtaxed.” Trump expressed a strong fondness for Scotland, appreciating his mother’s Scottish heritage while celebrating the opening of a new golf course at his Aberdeenshire resort.
During his visit, Trump indicated plans to play on the new golf course before returning to Washington D.C., reiterating that his responsibilities take precedence over leisure activities. He claimed to have played a role in “stopping about five wars,” emphasizing the importance of his international dealings.
Trump departed Menie on a presidential helicopter, returning to the United States from RAF Lossiemouth. His discussions with Scottish officials included raising concerns about oil and gas taxation, describing North Sea oil as a “treasure chest for the UK.”
John Swinney appealed to Trump regarding the impact of the 10% tariff on Scotch whisky exports to the U.S., which has hampered the industry significantly. Swinney highlighted the unique production of Scotch whisky, which is exclusive to Scotland. Trump appeared previously unaware of the whisky tariff issue, but indicated a willingness to address it.
The Scotch whisky export market to the U.S. is projected to be worth £971 million in 2024, with current tariffs estimated to cost the industry about £4 million weekly. Swinney utilized the meeting also to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging Trump to leverage his position for a ceasefire.
Eric Trump attended the meeting alongside Donald Trump Jr., who was present for the beginning and end. Swinney also presented Trump with historical documents, including a 1921 Census excerpt and a 1654 map of Lewis, while Trump reciprocated with a gift of an American bald eagle figurine.
The visit featured a dinner with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, during which they discussed whisky tariffs and trade matters. Trump also criticized the wind turbines in Scotland, labeling them “ugly monsters,” while asserting the significance of exploiting North Sea oil and gas.
The ongoing conversation around whisky tariffs stems from broader trade negotiations between the U.S. and the U.K., making this visit crucial for future discussions in both regions.
