Art Exhibitions Highlighting Diverse Perspectives

The “Refigured, Unframed” exhibition at the William Way LGBT Community Center is showcasing over 50 original works by 22 local artists. It aims to challenge traditional norms in life drawing and runs through June 30 at 1315 Spruce St. Another noteworthy exhibit, “Cecily Brown: Themes and Variations”, is being displayed at the Barnes Foundation until May 25. This exhibit features over 30 large-scale paintings that explore feminist perspectives and subvert gendered tropes in art.

Theater Productions to Inspire and Entertain

The Hedgerow Theatre Company in Media, PA, will present “Endlings” by Celine Song from May 13 to June 1. The play centers around Korean sea women and themes of identity. Meanwhile, the Arden Theatre Company will perform the musical “RENT” from May 15 to June 22, which depicts life during the AIDS crisis in New York City.

Community Engagement and Fundraising Events

On May 15, Triple Bottom Brewing will host an after-hours gathering focused on restorative justice practices from 6 to 9:30 p.m., encouraging discussions around healing and transformation. Coinciding with this are two workshops: a Mosaic-making workshop using the Zagar Method led by Isaiah Zagar from 6 to 8 p.m. at Magic Gardens Studio, and the annual fundraising event “The Arts Affair 2025” by the Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts at REC Philly from 7 to 9:30 p.m., featuring live performances and a printmaking workshop.

From May 16 to May 18, Jonene Lee will host her first-ever fundraising initiative for breast cancer awareness, which includes talks, celebrations, walks, and wellness sessions.

Art and Community Projects

The Mural Arts program will dedicate a new mural titled “The Seeker” by Danny Simmons on May 17 from 12-2 p.m. at 5559 Crowson St, aiming to spread positivity throughout the community. Additionally, the Chestnut Hill Home + Garden Festival, rescheduled to May 18, will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring diverse vendors and outdoor craft demonstrations suitable for attendees of all ages.

Visit the Quintessence at Sedgwick Theater to see “The Return of Benjamin Lay,” a play focusing on the history of abolitionism available until May 18. Another key exhibit, “Free, As One,” at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, highlights Black self-determination in the abolition movement and runs through May 23.

Exhibits Exploring Various Themes

In the world of sculpture, “Katie Hudnall: The Longest Distance between Two Points” will be on display at the Museum for Art in Wood until July 20. The National Liberty Museum is presenting “Word Powered: Exploring Free Speech Through Art,” a juried exhibition showcasing diverse artistic voices, which will be open until September 8. Moreover, the Clay Studio’s “Small Favors” exhibition features 400 works in four-inch cubes for sale through June 29.

The “Stone Soup: Works by Eustace Mamba” exhibition at Philadelphia’s Magic Garden, focusing on the resilience of Black communities, will be available until June 1. Lastly, the Green Space Stamp Rally invites participants to explore 18 sites in Northwest Philadelphia for prizes and guided tours through June 21.

Regular Activities for Families

Families can enjoy regular storytime and craft sessions led by Ms. Chen every other Wednesday at Franklin Square from 10-11 a.m. until October 22, fostering creativity and community engagement for children aged 12 and up.
