The Philadelphia district attorney race heats up as candidate Patrick Dugan faces backlash over misleading endorsement claims. Several ward leaders deny supporting his campaign, and discrepancies emerge on his website regarding endorsements, complicating the competitive election landscape. With no Republican candidates in the running, ward endorsements play a crucial role in mobilizing voters ahead of the May 20 primary. As both Dugan and incumbent DA Larry Krasner compete for support, financial backing and union endorsements add to the stakes of this vital election.
Philadelphia is currently witnessing tensions in its district attorney race as Patrick Dugan’s campaign faces scrutiny over misleading endorsement claims from ward leaders. This revelation comes amid a competitive election period where no official Democratic Party endorsement exists. Dugan’s campaign website previously highlighted endorsements from 32 Democratic wards, but discrepancies have emerged, with at least four wards denying any endorsement for his candidacy.
Ward leaders from the 35th, 37th, and 43rd Wards have publicly stated their positions as either not endorsing any candidate or remaining undecided. The 46th Ward, which was initially listed as endorsing Dugan, has revised its stance, with leader Jannie Blackwell confirming support for incumbent DA Larry Krasner. Following inquiries about the endorsements, several listings, including those from the 35th, 37th, 43rd, 17th, and 22nd Wards, were removed from Dugan’s campaign website.
Philadelphia’s councilmember and 22nd Ward leader, Cindy Bass, indicated that her ward is not yet committed to endorsing a candidate. Similarly, State Representative and leader of the 43rd Ward, Danilo Burgos, confirmed that no endorsement had been made and highlighted the ward’s plans to meet with both candidates for further discussions.
Dugan’s campaign manager argued that, despite the discrepancies, a split endorsement among the wards could still be beneficial for their campaign. Meanwhile, Krasner’s campaign has expressed disappointment over the misinformation regarding endorsements while emphasizing their own support from 31 wards, including the prominent 36th Ward in South Philadelphia.
As the May 20 primary approaches, this election is particularly vital as there are no Republican candidates running for the district attorney position. Local elections and low-turnout primaries often hinge on ward leader endorsements, which can significantly influence voter mobilization.
Despite recent challenges, Dugan has achieved endorsements from 27 wards and has garnered substantial support from various unions, notably from the Philadelphia Building Trades Council. Conversely, Krasner is backed by progressive organizations such as the Pennsylvania Working Families Party and enjoys public endorsements from influential Black Democratic leaders within the city. In addition to these dynamics, a new political group has emerged, funded by unions and the building industry, launching an advertising effort against Krasner, aiming to sway public opinion in favor of Dugan. In response, Krasner’s campaign also initiated its own advertising campaign as the election date draws nearer.
In terms of financial backing, Dugan has outpaced Krasner in fundraising efforts, bolstered by contributions from union members and local supporters. The financial landscape, combined with the stakes of the endorsements, indicates a critical showdown for the district attorney’s position in Philadelphia.
As both candidates work to secure their bases of support, the upcoming weeks will be crucial in determining the implications of the recent endorsement errors and the effectiveness of their respective campaign strategies moving into the primary. Both candidates are determined to rally their supporters and maximize voter turnout as they head toward the pivotal election date.
