Conceptual design of the upcoming renovations to the Pennsylvania State Museum, showcasing modern features and accessibility.
The Pennsylvania State Museum is set to begin a $55 million renovation in spring 2026, aimed at enhancing visitor experiences and modernizing outdated facilities. The project includes major upgrades to the museum and the adjacent archives tower, addressing issues such as centralized humidity control and accessibility. As part of the improvements, approximately 50% of the exhibits will be redesigned, and new event spaces will be created. The renovations, prioritized for inclusivity and historical representation, will also reflect evolving public expectations for modern museum experiences.
Pennsylvania is set to embark on a significant transformation of its historic State Museum and adjacent archives tower with a planned $55 million renovation project aimed at enhancing visitor experiences and modernizing the facility.
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) announced that renovations will begin in spring 2026. The museum will remain open until July 2026, allowing it to participate in America’s 250th birthday celebrations. Following this, the museum will close its doors in August 2026 and is anticipated to reopen to the public in early 2029.
Built in 1964, the Pennsylvania State Museum has not undergone significant renovations since its inception. Currently, the museum struggles with centralized humidity control, making it challenging to store artifacts appropriately. Additionally, the top floor of the museum has been converted into makeshift office space rather than serving as a flexible exhibition area, leading to a need for a comprehensive overhaul.
The renovation has been described by the PHMC executive director as a transformative project for Pennsylvania history and the capital region. It entails a variety of essential upgrades, including:
The adjacent archives tower, which currently lacks windows, will receive significant fire safety and climate control upgrades. This enhancement is crucial for the proper storage of museum artifacts. The 16th and 17th floors of the tower will be combined and transformed into a high-ceiling observation floor featuring large windows, providing sweeping views to the east and west.
PHMC and state officials anticipate that the observation level and the rooftop event space will serve as major attractions for visitors to Harrisburg. This project is considered vital for revitalizing the city and enhancing overall visitor experiences.
Funding for the renovation will be sourced from a capital fund provided by the state Department of General Services, financed through 20-year bonds. State legislators view this renovation as a significant advance in responding to evolving public expectations for modern museum experiences, which prioritize dynamic displays and improved educational opportunities.
Inclusivity will be a central theme of the renovations, ensuring that diverse histories are accurately represented throughout the museum. The design for this ambitious renovation is being handled by VITETTA, Lemoyne, and Annum Architects from Boston.
The upcoming renovation of the Pennsylvania State Museum and archives tower marks a significant investment in the preservation and presentation of the state’s history. This modernization effort is designed not only to improve the visitor experience but also to ensure that the museum meets contemporary standards for accessibility and climate control, facilitating better storage and display of important artifacts. As the project moves forward, it embodies a commitment to honoring Pennsylvania’s rich heritage while also adapting to the needs and expectations of its audience.
