Pennsylvania – Pennsylvania American Water has finalized an agreement to acquire the wastewater collection system of the City of Pittston for $26.4 million. This acquisition will benefit approximately 4,400 customers within the city, enhancing the efficiency and safety of wastewater management services.
The move comes as Pennsylvania American Water is already the provider of drinking water services in Pittston, serving over 135,000 customer connections in the region. Following the acquisition, the company plans to invest more than $5.1 million in essential upgrades to the collection system over the next five years. This investment will encompass several planned improvements, including main replacements, technology updates, security enhancements, and upgrades to the Geographic Information System for better data mapping and management.
Pittston Mayor Michael Lombardo confirmed that the decision for the sale followed a comprehensive vetting process of potential buyers, with Pennsylvania American Water presenting the most beneficial proposal for the city. The city intends to utilize proceeds from the sale to bolster essential municipal services and to fund community improvement initiatives. Notably, part of these funds will support the Market & Main project, which aims to develop a seven-story building featuring housing, retail space, and a 630-seat theatre.
Residents and businesses in Pittston can expect that their current wastewater collection rates will remain stable at the time the transaction closes. Future changes to rates will require the approval of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC), ensuring that customer interests are represented. Furthermore, the Wyoming Valley Sanitary Authority will continue to provide wastewater treatment services and manage billing directly for the customers.
