News Summary

The Wyss Medical Foundation has donated $4.9 million to create the Orthoplastic Global Education and Innovation Hub at the University of Pennsylvania. This initiative, led by a pioneer in orthoplastic surgery, aims to enhance education and innovation within the field. Additionally, the Lancaster Orthopedic Group has partnered with Penn State Health to improve orthopedic services in the region, focusing on better patient access and resource integration. Both initiatives represent significant advancements in medical education and patient care.

Philadelphia – The Wyss Medical Foundation has gifted $4.9 million to establish the Orthoplastic Global Education and Innovation Hub at the University of Pennsylvania. This hub aims to advance the field of orthoplastic surgery, enhancing educational opportunities and innovation in this specialized area of medicine.

The foundation, founded by Swiss businessman Hansjörg Wyss, focuses on philanthropic initiatives that support medical advancements globally. The new hub will be led by Scott Levin, M.D., a recognized pioneer in orthoplastic surgery and the editor-in-chief of the Orthoplastic Surgery journal, which has been in publication for five years. His leadership is expected to draw on his extensive experience to fulfill the vision of the hub.

Dr. Levin expressed his gratitude for the significant donation, noting that it would have a profound and positive impact on education and innovation within the field. The establishment of the hub reflects a commitment to improving surgical techniques and ensuring medical professionals are well-equipped to meet the needs of their patients.

In a related development, the Lancaster Orthopedic Group has affiliated with Penn State Health to address the increasing demand for orthopedic services in the Lancaster region. This strategic partnership aims to enhance patient access to orthopedic care and resources, a priority highlighted by Dr. April Armstrong, vice president of Penn State Health Musculoskeletal Services.

The Lancaster Orthopedic Group operates three locations across Lancaster County and provides services to a substantial number of patients. Providers from this group are already embedded within the staff at the Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center, facilitating a smoother transition for patients seeking orthopedic services.

The recent affiliation agreement, which took effect on January 31, will integrate the Lancaster Orthopedic Group into the Penn State Health system’s electronic medical record and billing platforms over the next 12 to 18 months. During this integration period, physicians will continue to operate under the Lancaster Orthopedic Group brand, maintaining responsibility for billing and patient scheduling.

Although there are no current plans to change the names of practice sites or create new job opportunities as part of this affiliation, the partnership aims to not only enhance services in Lancaster County but also expand offerings into Berks County. Physicians from the Lancaster Orthopedic Group will also join the staff at Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center, broadening their reach and improving service availability.

The Lancaster Orthopedic Group employs around 230 full-time equivalent personnel, including 18 orthopedic physicians and 15 advanced practice providers. The board of directors of the Lancaster Orthopedic Group will include representatives from Penn State Health, ensuring ongoing oversight of the practice’s operations and strategic decisions moving forward.

Both initiatives—the establishment of the Orthoplastic Global Education and Innovation Hub and the affiliation of the Lancaster Orthopedic Group with Penn State Health—are vital steps forward in improving medical education and patient care in their respective fields.
