News Summary

Ippei Mizuhara, a former interpreter for MLB player Shohei Ohtani, has begun a nearly five-year prison sentence for stealing $17 million from him. Mizuhara accessed Ohtani’s financial accounts to execute fraudulent transactions for personal expenses, including gambling debts. He is also ordered to pay $18 million in restitution. This case highlights the underlying vulnerabilities in professional sports relationships and the potential fallout from breach of trust.

Pennsylvania – Ippei Mizuhara, a former interpreter for Major League Baseball player Shohei Ohtani, began serving a nearly five-year prison sentence for stealing approximately $17 million from the athlete. Mizuhara, 40, surrendered to the Federal Correctional Institution Allenwood Low, a low-security facility located about 125 miles northwest of Philadelphia, on Monday.

Mizuhara was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison for his involvement in bank and tax fraud activities. Additionally, he has been ordered to pay a staggering $18 million in restitution, with $17 million earmarked for Ohtani and the remaining amount for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Following his prison term, Mizuhara will also face three years of supervised release.

The former interpreter began accessing Ohtani’s financial accounts in 2021, altering security protocols to impersonate the player and execute multiple wire transfers. As part of his fraudulent activities, Mizuhara admitted to utilizing the stolen funds to settle gambling debts and cover various personal expenses, including $325,000 spent on baseball cards and dental bills.

His promotional activities made Mizuhara a trusted friend and confidant of Ohtani, assisting the player through significant moments in his career. Recently, Ohtani has been making headlines as he is expected to pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers again, marking his return after almost two years of recovery from elbow surgery.

Gambling Activities

The fraud case involving Mizuhara is part of a larger investigation into illegal gambling operations in Southern California. Between December 2021 and January 2024, he placed approximately 19,000 sports wagers, averaging about 25 bets per day. His gambling activities saw around $142 million in winnings but also resulted in over $182 million in losses, culminating in total gambling losses exceeding $40 million.

Legal Proceedings and Consequences

Judge criticism was expressed during the sentencing, where Mizuhara acknowledged his actions but provided various excuses that were not well received. The investigation that led to Mizuhara’s arrest exposed him as being connected to illegal sports bookmaking organizations in the area, yet there is currently no evidence indicating Ohtani was aware of or involved in Mizuhara’s actions.

After his fraudulent activities came to light, Mizuhara was terminated from his position with the Dodgers in March 2024. His legal troubles have also raised the possibility of deportation back to Japan following his prison term, as indicated by his legal representative.

Background on Shohei Ohtani

Shohei Ohtani, an internationally renowned baseball player, has garnered acclaim for his exceptional skills in both pitching and batting. He has been considered one of the most talented players in Major League Baseball, significantly contributing to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ roster. Ohtani’s upcoming return to the diamond has generated anticipation among fans and analysts alike, particularly after a lengthy rehabilitation process.

The case of Izuhara serves as a stark reminder of the importance of trust and ethical behavior in professional sports, where relationships between players and their support staff can significantly impact careers and lives. The outcome of Mizuhara’s actions not only affects his future but also sheds light on the potential vulnerabilities that exist within the framework of professional athletics.

As Mizuhara serves his sentence, the sports community watches to see how the fallout from this case will continue to develop.
