Philadelphia’s Italian Market Festival to Unveil New Murals

News Summary

The Italian Market Festival in Philadelphia will be held on May 17 and 18, 2025, featuring the unveiling of three new murals honoring key figures in the market’s history. Alongside vibrant art displays, the festival promises a lively atmosphere with over 120 vendors, live entertainment, and culinary delights, making it a must-visit event for locals and visitors alike.

Philadelphia – The annual Italian Market Festival will take place at South Philadelphia’s 9th Street Market on May 17 and 18, 2025, promising an exciting weekend filled with lively activities and new public art displays. This year, festival attendees will be treated to the unveiling of three new murals on South 9th Street that celebrate the key founders of the market, making this year’s event particularly special.

The vibrant murals, created by the Our Market Project, pay tribute to significant figures in the market’s history. They depict Elizabeth “Betty Ann” Mongelluzzo, known affectionately as “Aunt Betty Ann” within the community, alongside brothers Joe and Danny DiBruno, and Carl Redel. Mongelluzzo, who passed away in 2019, served as a florist in the Italian Market for 30 years and was particularly remembered for her tradition of weaving palms on Palm Sunday.

Joe and Danny DiBruno, founders of DiBruno Brothers Specialty Foods established in 1939, are celebrated for their lasting impact on the market and its offerings. Carl Redel, the founder of Carl’s Vineland Farm Eggs, was a Holocaust survivor and one of only two family members to escape the tragedy, adding a rich layer of history and resilience to the market’s legacy. His grandson, Steve Redel, now manages the family business and recognizes the historical significance of the market to the community.

The mural project is spearheaded by Michelle Angela Ortiz, a daughter of immigrants who grew up in the market. She emphasizes the importance of art in representing the stories of immigrant and migrant communities, further enhancing the cultural tapestry of the Italian Market. In addition to the murals, Ortiz is also revitalizing the produce stands by replacing wooden structures with weather-resistant variants and updating worn-out awnings with unique hand-painted designs.

The official unveiling of the murals will coincide with the revival of walking tours of the market, adding an educational element to the festivities. The Italian Market Festival is considered the busiest weekend of the year, showcasing over 120 vendors and transforming the market into a lively block party atmosphere. Among the numerous activities planned, the John Marzano Half Ball Tournament will commence on May 17 at 10 a.m. at the Christopher Columbus Charter Schoolyard, inviting both participants and spectators to join in the festivities.

The following day, the annual Procession of Saints will take place on May 18 at 11 a.m., featuring a ceremonial blessing of the market at the intersection of 9th and Washington Avenue. Throughout the weekend, festival attendees can also enjoy live music and entertainment spread across multiple stages, creating an engaging environment for all ages.

As one of the year’s most anticipated events, large crowds are expected at the festival. Visitors are advised to arrive early to navigate potential long lines and are encouraged to use public transportation due to parking difficulties in the area. The festival will highlight some of the market’s most beloved food offerings, including fresh mozzarella, imported cheeses, and traditional Italian pastries, ensuring a delightful culinary experience.

This year’s Italian Market Festival not only celebrates the rich culture of South Philadelphia but also honors the legacy of its founders through art and community engagement, making it a must-visit event for both locals and visitors alike.
