Digital gambling in Pennsylvania showing growth

News Summary

Pennsylvania’s gambling revenue surged by 10.7% in April 2025, totaling $558.7 million. Growth was fueled by a remarkable 31.3% rise in iGaming revenue, particularly in online slots. Sports betting revenue remained steady, while land-based gambling faced mixed results. This increase not only highlights the booming digital gaming sector but also underscores the industry’s contribution to state tax revenue, amounting to $234.5 million in April. The conclusions point to a robust financial landscape despite challenges in traditional gaming forms.

Pennsylvania has reported a significant increase in gambling revenue for April 2025, rising by 10.7% compared to the previous year. The overall commercial revenue for the month reached $558.7 million, marking an increase from $504.7 million in April 2024, although it fell short by 2.8% from a record $574.5 million in March 2025.

The substantial increase in revenue is primarily attributed to the growth of iGaming, which continues to outpace other forms of gambling in the state. iGaming revenue, encompassing online slots, table games, and poker, totaled $227.7 million, reflecting a robust increase of 31.3% from last year. Notably, online slots led this category, generating $169.5 million, a remarkable 34.5% increase. Online table games also saw impressive growth, with revenues reaching $55.9 million, marking a 24.2% increase, while online poker revenue experienced a slight dip to $2.3 million, down 2.8%.

In contrast to iGaming success, sports betting revenue remained relatively stable compared to last year, with total revenue amounting to $42.5 million in April. Online sports betting accounted for the majority, bringing in $41.2 million, while retail sports betting generated $1.4 million. The total handle for sports betting reached $711.6 million, an increase of 10.1% from the previous year, resulting in a statewide hold of 5.97%.

Despite the strong performance in the digital gaming sector, traditional forms of gambling have shown mixed results. Revenue from land-based slot machines decreased slightly by 1.2%, totaling $203.1 million. However, retail table games experienced favorable conditions, with revenue increasing by 2.8% to $80.6 million. Conversely, revenue from video gaming terminals decreased by 3.6%, and revenue from fantasy sports showed a modest increase of 2.3% to $1.3 million.

Leading iGaming Operators

Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course emerged as the leader in the iGaming sector, amassing $83.2 million in revenue, a substantial increase of 33.5%. Valley Forge Casino Resort followed closely with $66.7 million, reflecting a 38.8% increase, while Rivers Casino Philadelphia reported $35.9 million, marking a 17.1% increase.

Tax Revenue Contribution

The thriving gambling industry in Pennsylvania also contributes significantly to the state’s tax revenue. In April, tax revenue from legal gambling reached $234.5 million. This figure includes $100.8 million generated from iGaming, $15.3 million from sports betting, $102.8 million from land-based slots, and $13.5 million from retail table games.

Conclusion

As Pennsylvania’s gambling sector continues to thrive, the growth in iGaming stands out as a critical driver for revenue increases. While traditional gaming forms face challenges, the overall financial landscape remains robust, promising continued economic contribution through both gaming revenue and associated taxation.
